For Authors
Submit ManuscriptAudience:
The primary audience for Journal of Technology and Higher Education: Emerging Practice is higher education professionals, including faculty, co-curricular educators, and administrative staff. Specifically, JTHE seeks to serve NASPA membership, which includes entry-level, intermediate-level, and senior-level professionals who are educators, scholars, policymakers, faculty, and executive leaders. Technology is integral to every aspect of the collegiate enterprise and the journal, as such, covers a wide swath of educational topics and readers. JTHE seeks to publish articles that speak to educators across this broad range of interests, levels, and experiences. The Editorial Board is committed to uplifting exploration in practice, modes, and possibilities through technology across multiple disciplines and welcomes submissions that speak to different constituencies. JTHE therefore seeks submissions around technology—however it may be defined—and higher education as it related to specific or broad campus constituencies.
Types of Manuscripts:
Technology is a quickly-morphing area of study, with innovations in platform, construction, and delivery occurring constantly. Journal of Technology and Higher Education: Emerging Practice recognizes this facet of topic and therefore seeks a wide span of innovative and insightful articles through a variety of forms. JTHE welcomes submissions of a range of manuscripts; those listed below are not meant to constrict format, but provide a general guideline for types of submissions that would be considered publishable. Please utilize the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2019), 7th edition for specific information on manuscript types.
Theoretical Manuscripts are papers in which the “authors draw on existing research literature to advance theory” (American Psychological Association, 2010, p. 10). Technology allows a (re)imagining of self, community, and practice; grounded theory can build a powerful foundation for exploration and is thus welcomed for submission. Theoretical manuscripts may be a review and critiques of existing theories or research findings; extension of existing literature; theoretical critique of practice; or innovative and forward-thinking expositions of current or future state(s) of technology and higher education.
Review Manuscripts “are critical evaluations of material that has already been published” (APA, 2001, p. 9). These manuscripts can be meta-analysis of qualitative or quantitative research, policy analysis, or compilations of existing theories or models in student affairs practice. Review manuscripts often include a) issue being considered, b) summary of previous research and literature, c) identification of relationships, “contradictions, gaps and inconsistencies” (p. 7), and d) implications for practice, policy, and next steps. Review manuscripts that explore the contemporary understanding of technology and higher education are welcomed for submission.
Reports of Empirical Studies are “reports of original research” (APA, 2010, p. 10). The standard form for empirical reports is introduction, method, results, and discussion but authors may adapt that form to fit the parameters of their research method. JTHE emphasizes connection to practice regarding empirical studies, connection results to potential programming and policy.
Case Studies are “reports of case materials obtained while working with an individual, a group, a community, or an organization” (APA, 2010, p. 11). This type of manuscript is often used to present qualitative research findings, discuss an issue or problem in practice (e.g., policy analysis) and solutions to the same, reveal the use of or potential for a research approach, apply theory to practice, or analyze and/or apply an innovative practice. Case studies, whether they are analyzing data or illustrating practice, are grounded in theory and a specific experience.
